BREAKING NEWS: LIBERIA INTRODUCES FIRST LAW AGAINST FGM

Liberia's first female president leaves her function with a significant message in the fight against FGM

Liberia is one of the few African countries without a FGM ban. 50% of women and girls are affected by FGM in this country.

But in January 2018, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ended her last day in office with a major step against FGM.
The first female president of Liberia Sirleaf passed „the Executive Order on the Domestic Violence Bill“ with a law against FGM.

With the new bill Sirleaf sets an example against this cruel ritual and calls the population to abandon this terrible tradition.
However, the current law has some gaps: it is limited to 12 months and only valid for underaged girls.

The pressure within the communities is enormously high, which results in the majority of adult women deciding on FGM.

We urge new President George Weah to work actively for a stricter law against FGM - a permanent law that provides women and girls of all ages with adequate protection against genital mutilation.
