Mary S. Taylor – our little Desert Flower

Dear Desert Flower Foundation team,

First of all I’d like to send a big thank you to all of you from Newton in Sierra Leone! There are no words that could express my gratitude for your help. Thanks to your support my granddaughter, Mary S. Taylor, won’t be cut and has an opportunity to develop normally.

Mary is eleven years old and attends the sixth class at St. Francis Elementary School. She is a good student and also commits herself to many artistic events. Mary likes drawing very much and has a great talent for it. She can relax while drawing. And relaxing is exactly what my granddaughter needs, because she has really been through a lot in her short life.

At first, her parents divorced and then her father, my son left them. She needed quite a lot of time to recover. And when she almost completely overcame all these troubles, her mother met a man who said that he doesn’t want to take care of another man’s child. She had to choose, either she marries her new love or stays with her daughter. The choice was unfortunately unfavourable for Mary – her mother brought her to me and stated that she wants to begin a new life with this man. The situation affected my little girl unbelievably deeply. She became very reserved at once and didn’t want to talk to anyone. I always had the feeling that Mary was unhappy with me. It was a very difficult time for both of us.

Everything changed as if by magic when I found the Desert Flower Foundation’s project and sent my granddaughter to school. There she met many new friends and came out of her shell. Now she also helps me with selling at the market.

Without your help, I couldn’t afford sending my granddaughter to school. Moreover, I am also very happy that she won’t be cut. I think your program is kind of a new era for our society. We need changes in order to keep up with the rest of the world!

Many Thanks!
Alice
