Since the 18th century FGM is practiced in Sierra Leone. The ones who are responsible for this cruel practice are so-called secret societies, like the Bondo Society, which brings together around 50, 000 circumcisers. Until now, politicians were powerless against these groups.

Dear Desert Flower Foundation,

My name is Wotay Conteh and I am a grandmother of three lovely girls. We live together with them and their parents in an unfinished house in Newton. My daughter-in-law and I work as gardeners. However, because the money we earn is not enough to provide for the whole family, she also works in the quarry and helps on farms in the neighbouring communities during harvest.
