Musu, our brave little Desert Flower from Sierra Leone

Now I can attend school

Dear Desert Flower Foundation,

My name is Wotay Conteh and I am a grandmother of three lovely girls. We live together with them and their parents in an unfinished house in Newton. My daughter-in-law and I work as gardeners. However, because the money we earn is not enough to provide for the whole family, she also works in the quarry and helps on farms in the neighbouring communities during harvest.

My son has been very ill for two years and has serious difficulty in walking. Because of the illness he had to quit his job as a palm wine tapper and his wife became a breadwinner for our family.

The situation of our family was hopeless and we were afraid that we won’t be able to take care of our girls in future.

Luckily, we learned of the Desert Flower Foundation project. In order to take part in this sponsorship programme, we had to commit ourselves not to cut my youngest granddaughter Musu.

I am very glad Musu won’t be cut, because I see her two older sisters suffer greatly from the consequences of FGM – just as her mother and I do. Now our Musu is 7 years old and can finally attend school. Sadly, Musu is very sickly. She often suffers from cold and fever. Fortunately Desert Flower Foundation provides us with essential medicines and medical service.

Thanks to the Desert Flower Foundation support our whole family is doing much better. We are overjoyed and would like to sincerely thank all of the Desert Flower Foundation donors and its team!

Many thanks,

Wotay Conteh
