As the first American president, Barack Obama condemns female genital mutilation as well as the oppression of women in Africa during his visit in Kenya: “Treating women as second-class citizens is a bad tradition: it holds you back. There is no excuse for sexual assault or domestic violence, there is no reason that young girls should suffer genital mutilation, there is no place in a civilised society for an early or forced marriage of children. These traditions may go back centuries; they have no place in 21st century. A society prohibiting women from getting education and own income, will never be able to perform well within the world economy. It dooms its potential to fall behind the global economy. It is like a football team aiming to win with just half of the team playing.”
Finally, an American president having African roots, told Africans what should have been said long time ago. Well done Mr. Obama!
