Egypt: Man sues wife over FGM

For the first time in the history of Egypt, a man has filed a legal complaint against his wife for genital mutilating their two daughters at the age of 10 and 12, against his will.

Nour Al Deen Hanafi demands the sentencing of his wife, as FGM is illegal and against the law and as their two daughters are now suffering from serious psychological consequences.

On 11th of November, the case will be heard by a court in Qena.
If convicted, the mother will be imprisoned for up to three years.

FGM in Egypt has been prohibited by law since 2007. In order to stop this inhumane crime, penalties were strengthened in 2016. Circumcisers now face 5 to 7 years imprisonment.
Parents who let their daughters undergo FGM can face up to 3 years in prison under the law.

According to official figures, 82% of  FGM operations nowadays in Egypt have been conducted by medical practitioners.

The Egyptian government must take serious action against FGM and put an end to this cruel ritual!
