In september 2016 a two year old girl became a victim of genital female mutilation in Ireland.
After the arrest of the girl's father, a Somali in his 30s, the authorities are now looking for a woman who is said to have cut the girl on the father's request. After the arrest the 2 year old was treated in hospitals for her injuries.
There are approximately 3780 women who are affected by FGM in Ireland.
Altough FGM is illegal since the Criminal Justice Act 2012 it is believed that the arrest is the first of its kind in Ireland.
We demand from the Irish government to invest into education and information about FGM in order to raise awareness of this cruel ritual, which is also practiced in Ireland.
