17 year old teenager Mayar Mohamed had to undergo FGM with her twin sister at an Egyptian hospital.
Her sister survived the procedure, Mayar didn’t !
The young girl suffered from complications, which caused severe bleeding and led to her death!
Although FGM is banned in Egypt, 85% of women between the age of 15 and 49 have undergone the procedure. Even more shocking : 82% of these illegal procedures are carried out by trained medical personnel!
According to Fakhr El-Din, a supporter in the fight against FGM, there are many hospitals performing such surgeries.
Asked during the investigations, Mayar’s parents denied the procedure for the doctor’s sake!
They are only one of many families who are not cooperative in telling about the operations, which causes one of the main problems monitoring the medical institutions.
Therefore it is crucial not only to run legal measures, but also to educate the communities about the physical and psychological consequences of FGM. Further, the UN called on health professionals to take a strong stand against the medicalisation of FGM!
We can’t see such cases happen any longer! Support us in the fight against FGM!
