According the Health and Social Care Information Centre there were 1242 newly recorded cases of FGM between January and March 2016 in England. At least 2% of all new cases were girls under the age of 18.
Despite the hurtful practice being illegal in the UK since 1985, there has never been a successful prosecution against anyone found to practice it.
What more needs to happen in order to persecute perpetrators?
1242 is not just a number, it is a girl or young woman who has been subjected to a crime! These figures and recent incidents call for renewed and focused efforts in the fight against FGM.
It’s time for all sectors and professionals to see FGM as their business and that protecting girls from FGM becomes a normal part of their practice!
