A ten-year-old girl bleed to death in Galkayo Somalia in July.
A circumciser had injured an important vein of the girl during the pointless and cruel procedure of female genital mutilation and passed away two days later.
The attending physician had never seen such a cruel mutilation before.
The circumciser, we call her murderer, was neither arrested nor reported.
In Somalia, influential Muslims are preventing FGM from being punished, even though FGM is banned in the Somali constitution.
Despite many campaigns, 98 percent of girls in Somalia are still being mutilated and the population, as well as the girl's father, support the practice. Even after the death of his ten-year-old daughter, he defends the ritual of female genital mutilation in an interview:
"People in the area are content with FGM, it's our culture"
It is high time that the international community crack down on this crime against innocent girls and punish influential FGM advocates who have taken the Somali society hostag. These include entry bans into other countries for them and their family clans, as well as the freezing of their considerable assets, which they have mostly stashed abroad.
