Over 200 million women are affected by FGM worldwide.
Altough the United States America passed a federal law in 1996 making FGM a crime, the number of victims is still increasing. In 2013, the law was amended to make it illegal to knowingly transport a girl out of the U.S. to have the procedure carried out in another country.
Since 1990, the number of women and girls under 18 living in the U.S. who have undergone or are at risk for FGM has more than tripled, with more than 500,000 who are either at risk or have had the procedure done.
The number of women affected by FGM keeps rising worldwide!
