It is estimated that over three million girls worldwide undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) every year. Most of them are under 15 years old. Waris Dirie and her Desert Flower Foundation will never give up fighting this brutal ritual!
We have already achieved this thanks to your donations:
In 2002 only a few people knew about FGM. In 2019 the whole world is aware of this cruel crime.
In 2002 only 4 African states had a law against FGM. In 2019, only 4 African states had no law against FGM.
In 2003, the prevalence rate of FGM in East Africa among girls under 14 years of age was still 71.4 per cent and in West Africa even 73.6 per cent. In 2019, according to the British Medical Journal, the prevalence rate of FGM in East Africa among girls under 14 years of age is only 8 percent and in West Africa 25.3 percent.
With our project "Save a small desert flower" we were able to protect 1000 girls in Sierra Leone (West Africa) from FGM and enable them to attend school. 2019 we are building schools in Sierra Leone for a further 800 children.
We still want to achieve this:
- The total eradication of FGM worldwide.
- Targeted school education for all children in Africa.
- Sexual education at all schools in Africa.
- The social equality of men and women in Africa.
- Competent and holistic treatment of FGM-victims in all hospitals.
