How to become a sponsor?
The best way for you to help save a girl from female genital mutilation (FGM) is through sponsorship. As a result of donations received, the Desert Flower Foundation (DFF) enters into a contract with the parents. This contract ensures the integrity of an endangered girl and enables the girls to attend school.
What is included in the contract? 4 crucial elements in the fight against FGM.
-
Family
-
Education
-
Health
-
Sustainability
Family
With your donation, the Desert Flower Foundation does not only support one child, but also their family and projects, such as building schools that benefit the whole community. This is especially important for the acceptance of our local work.
The parents receive financial support for food and other important expenses such as electricity and water in order to provide for the family’s wellbeing and to prevent them from sending their children to work instead of school. The Desert Flower sponsorship ensures that the girls attend school, do not get married at a young age and of course won’t suffer from the cruel torture of genital mutilation.
Regular checks by paediatricians from the Desert Flower Foundation guarantee the integrity of the beneficiaries.. For girls fleeing from FGM or forced marriage the DFF is planning to establish a „safe house“.
Education
The girls have the opportunity to go to school. Usually the school attendance fails, because the parents cannot afford to buy schoolbooks for their children or the girls do not have a suitable school uniform. Through your sponsorship we ensure that the girls receive school and exercise books, writing materials and school clothes through donations received. The point of education is vital to ensure the girls receive the chance for a self- determined and happy life and can additionally tackle the issue within their family of the forced marriage issue as well. The contract ensures that the girls won't marry until they finish their education, which reduces the risk of foreced marriages.
An educated girl becomes a self-determined woman!
Health
The primary aim is to ensure that the girls do not suffer FGM and will consequently be free from life- threatening health issues that currently millions of young girls and women endure. Our locally appointed resident doctor ensures regular health checks take place and that no sign of FGM has been performed on the girl. Additionally, the girls are inoculated against the risk of serious disease and medicine provided in cases where sickness occurs.
Sustainability
Your sponsorship is vital, not only by preventing girls from suffering FGM through our “Save a Little Desert Flower” program but also in sustaining our long term campaign of re-educating the families who practice FGM. Family and cultural values will be changed gradually. Girls and their families, where FGM is no longer practiced, will become role models for others.
We are sure that through your help our ongoing “Save a Little Desert Flower“ campaign will help eradicate this barbaric human rights violation of young girls and women.
Thank you for your support.
